Shirley Rose Cockburn is a progressive artist working in gouaches, watercolours, acrylic, and gold leaf. Her work attempts to capture the serenity of Northern Ontario's meditative landscape. She studied paper making and marbling, along with calligraphy while living in Singapore in the early 90s. Cockburn was instantly captured by the silky flow of gouaches and inks applied to the picture place, using various nibs and brushes. Her fascination for the feel and texture of paper led her to study the techniques of handmade paper making and in turn producing handmade books.Cockburn returned to Northern Ontario in 1995. Her growing interest in a wide range of art forms guided her to expand her knowledge and applications. Cockburn studied at Canadore College, Nipissing University (Bachelor of Arts Program,) and participated in workshops led by well-known Canadian and international artists.
