JOB POSTING –Special Events Assistant (Canada Summer Jobs 2016)

The Northern Artist Gallery is seeking a Special Event Assistant for an 8-week position funded through the Canada Summer Jobs programs. Applicants must meet the following criteria: 1) be between 15 and 30 years (inclusive) at the start of employment; 2) have been registered as a full-time student during the preceding academic year and intend to return to school as a post-secondary student on a full-time basis during the next academic year; 3) be a Canadian Citizen, permanent resident, or person on whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act and; 4) is legally entitled to work according to the relevant provincial legislation and regulations.

The Special Events Assistant will assist in the organization and completion of the annual 2017 Picture Our Lakes Photography and Calendar Contest. The student will also promote and represent Artists on Elgin at various special events, fundraisers and annual summer festivals. The Special Events Assistant will work closely with the full-time Organizational Development Officer on a wide range of activities, including marketing, community relations, and event planning.

• Promote the Picture Our Lakes contest, reception, and sales, along with other special events through social media, press releases, television/print/radio interviews, online calendars, and community boards
• Research local events and propose involvement in these events; attend and participate in events on behalf of Artists on Elgin and Picture Our Lakes
• Organize the Picture Our Lakes contest reception, including booking venue, food, transportation, etc.
• Assist in the development of marketing materials, including posters, invitations, newsletters; create power point presentations and additional media
• Assist in editing and assembling of Picture Our Lakes calendar and postcards
• Create and maintain databases and timelines; assist in tracking budget and sponsorships
• Develop and execute a marketing plan with the Organizational Development Officer & Marketing Committee
• Work with the Picture Our Lakes Committee to develop a business plan for fundraising/selling Picture Our Lakes calendars & postcards
• Attend relevant committee meetings; participate in meetings and report on progress
• Research ideas related to events, promotion, fundraising
• Other duties as required

• Excellent oral and written communication skills
• Willingness to learn new skills
• Competency in Word, Excel, PowerPoint required
• Familiarity with social media platforms including Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and Pinterest
• Experience in Photoshop and Illustrator (or comparable graphics programs); video editing software considered an asset
• Experience in/with any of the following is a definite asset: marketing, event planning, graphic design/digital arts, communications, not-for-profit organizations, art communities/organizations
