The Messengers: Metalwork by Rebecca Allen

SUDBURY, ON – May 27, 2013– Artists on Elgin is excited to welcome the "Iron Maiden" Rebecca Allen for her solo exhibit entitled The Messengers. This exhibit features sculptures inspired by birds and their various representations. It will be on display throughout the month of June at Artists on Elgin. The public is invited to meet Rebecca during her opening reception on Saturday, June 1, 2013, from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Rebecca speaks of her inspiration: "Birds have always stirred the human heart and hold a special place in our culture. Many believe birds to be 'the messengers' between this world and the world of the spirit. Ravens and crows are often portrayed as mischievous and are sometimes seen as symbols of war and death, but also appear as messengers of the deities and the link between the natural and the supernatural world."

Rebecca is a graduate of the Advanced Fine Arts Program at Georgian College. Since her graduation, she has become a government-licensed welder and has been actively designing and creating wonderful, whimsical steel sculptures for the garden and home. She takes a feminine approach to a male dominated trade by creating steel sculptures that contain elements of softness and movement within static steel forms.

"Many myths also link birds and their power of flight to the arrival of life and also the carriers of the soul after death. To me they embody freedom, wisdom, fragility, curiosity and beauty," muses Rebecca.

The Messengers will be on display for the month of June. Artists on Elgin invites the public to come in and meet the artist during the opening reception on June 1 from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.
