Artists on Elgin held an awards ceremony and reception on Thursday, June 20th for the finalists of the RBC Dominion Securities "Art Impact" Juried Art Show and to announce the winners of the show.

North Bay photographer, Debbie Shipley, won best in show for her piece, "Untitled". "It was a school trip to Upper Canada Village that I remember as the moment I fell in love with photography. It was the moment my mother gave me full use of her Kodak Brownie, trusting my eight year old self to remember how to load the clunky film cartridge into the back of the basic box camera and to stand still when hitting the trigger", explained Debbie.

French Canadian artist, Lucie Gagnon took second place with her graphite pencil piece entitled, "Superior Water Spouts". Lucie spent most of her life in a small village located in the vast James Bay Frontier of Northern Ontario. It was during that period that she explored and developed a passion for nature and her art. Since 2001, Lucie has created her graphite pencil fine artworks from her studio near Lake Superior.

Third place was awarded to Martin Foley of Haileybury, for his acrylic piece "Glacial Footprint". "My work reflects the northern landscape, the shorelines of lakes and rivers with attention focused on the geology of these landscapes", explains Martin. "Glacial Footprint" was also purchased for the Vale Living with Lakes Centre on behalf of Artists on Elgin and Vale. The piece will be put on permanent display.

Local artist and teacher, Julie Courtemanche was voted the People's Choice for her acrylic piece "Mother Earth", which received the majority of over 280 votes.

In the youth category, first place was awarded to student Madison Kotyluk of Pius XII Catholic Elementary School for her mixed media piece, "Farm". Second place was awarded to Celina Rios-Nadeau who is currently attending Lockerby Composite School for her conté piece "Wisps of Doubt".
